China Policy Barometer: Miao Wei
Summary:

Miao Wei (苗圩), Minister of Industry and Information Technology

"To ensure good performance in 2012, [we] need to make sure that we place an emphasis on steady growth, pay close attention to any changes to the situation, enhance the coordination of industrial policy and fiscal and credit policy, effectively eliminate all kinds of risks and to take precautions against excessive decline in growth."

- Miao Wei, at the National Industry and Information Technology Work Conference.

Key phrases: maintain growth, promote industry transformation

Core concerns: December's Industry and Information Technology Conference took place amid public anger at reports, later withdrawn, that the personal data of 6 million interest users had been leaked. Also on the government's agenda is the NDRC's antimonopoly investigation into China UniCom and China Telecom, which came about because of the IT ministry's delay in introducing reforms to break the major operators' dominance, including a long-delayed program aimed at integrating telephone, Internet and TV services. Since the second half of 2011, the the profits of companies in China's industrial sector have continued to decline, production has continued to struggle, domestic demand is weak and it's difficult to reduce energy consumption - all of these problems are related to deep and persistent problems with China's economic structure being unreasonable for a long time.
