A public security bureau in Chengdu has used its micro blog to deny media accounts of a recent riot at Foxconn’s factory in the central Chinese metropolis.
The media accounts, which surfaced on a website and spread via Taiwanese papers, claimed that hundreds of workers clashed with security staff, resulting in many injuries and several arrests.
The public security bureau in Chengdu’s Gaoxin District, where Foxconn makes two thirds of the world’s iPads, wrote on Thursday that alcohol had played a big part in the initial disturbance.
In its blog post, the bureau said that seven Foxconn employees had been drinking at a restaurant near the factory and confronted the owners, a couple who were quarrelling loudly with one another. In response, the workers then "smashed things and a witness called the police.
"The seven workers ran back to their dormitory while shouting “people are getting beaten up,” which got 100 other people inolved in the commotion and throwing things," the blog post said.
The bureau also wrote said that it had detained four people responsible for the violence and sent them back to their dormitory the following morning.
Foxconn released its own statement on the events, saying that they took place outside its campus and repeating the police's comments.
