Representatives from the Beijing offices of Motorola Mobility said that workers were given a deadline of noon yesterday (Aug 21) to sign labor termination agreements with the company, according to China National Radio.

According to the new termination package offered by the company, employees would receive an additional two months of their basic pay including housing fund payments and they would also be compensated for untaken annual leave.

The company said it would no longer engage in negotiations with employees who did not sign the agreement before the deadline and said that such employees would only be paid the legally-required minimum payment.

The job cuts in Beijing follow Motorola Mobility's announcement last week that it will slash nearly 4,000 jobs worldwide this year, about 20 percent of its global workforce. China National Radio says that over 1,000 Chinese staff are to be laid off from Motorola Mobility's China office, accounting for more than 30 percent of the company's China staff.

Protests by the Chinese staff of Motorola Mobility broke out soon after the job cuts were announced, with staff holding up banners close to Motorola's Beijing office. The banners called on the company to negotiate with employees and not engage in a "violent job cut".
