The dramatic fall in the sales of Japanese-branded cars in the Chinese auto market appears to be boosting sales of domestically manufactured cars.
Last Thursday, Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd(吉利汽车), the Hong Kong-listed subsidary of the Hangzhou-based Zhejiang Geely Holding Group announced they had sold close to 50,000 vehicles in October.
This represented a 35 percent jump on the number of units sold in October 2011 and a 13 percent increase on September sales.
Of the 48,609 cars sold in October, 36,400 were bought in China, an increase of 20 percent on the same period last year.
Geely sold 12,200 vehicles in the overseas market in October, a new company record for overseas sales in a single month.
From January to October this year, the company says that is has sold a total of 372,547 units, up 13 percent on the number sold by this time last year and at about 80 percent of their 2012 sales target of 460,000 cars sold.
81,000 of the Geely cars sold through to October were bought abroad, meaning that the company has already exceeded their target of selling 80,000 units abroad in 2012.
The company is predicting that they will be able to sell a total of 100,000 units abroad this year.
If Geely can achieve this goal, it will become only the second independent Chinese car brand after Chery (奇瑞) to break the 100,000 sales abroad in a year mark.
