Podcast: Bringing Foreign Films to China

China is set to surpass the U.S. as the world’s largest film market by the year 2020. Recently the Chinese government increased the annual number of foreign films that can be screened in the country from 20 to 34. Many Hollywood producers fight for these lucrative slots, while some opt for a work-around in the form of a co-production with Chinese studios.

In today’s podcast we talk with Hollywood producer Janet Yang, who’s worked since the 1980s to bring Chinese movies to the West, Western movies to China, and worked as a fixer for co-productions. From 1987’s Empire of the Sun to this year’s Shanghai Calling, Yang has witnessed an incredible transformation in China’s film industry. Today we talk about how things have changed over the years for foreign filmmakers in China, what it’s like dealing with SARFT restrictions, and whether Chinese movies can ever become an international force under the current environment.
