China's Population Exceeds 1.35 Billion

On Feb 22, China's National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) released a Statistical Communiqué on the country's National Economic and Social Development.

The document contains everything from economic indicators like trade, inflation and previously announced GDP growth figures through to data on employment and population growth.

According to the communiqué, China's population increased by 6.69 million last year to reach 1.354 billion by the end of 2012. The number of those in employment was estimated to be 767 million.

It is worth noting that the total number of migrant workers was 262 million, accounting for one-third of the total working population. In other words, one in every three people with a job is a migrant worker.

In 2012, there were 194 million people aged 60 or over, accounting for 14.3 percent of the total population, an increase of 0.59 percentage points over 2011.

According to the NBS data, the per capita net annual income of rural residents was 7,917 yuan, a nominal increase of 13.5 percent on 2011, after accounting for inflation the actual growth rate was 10.7 percent.  The average per capita annual disposable income of urban residents was 24,565 yuan, an increase of 12.6 percent, or 9.6 percent after taking inflation into account.

The statistics shows that at the end of 2011 China's foreign exchange reserves reached $3,3 trillion, an increase of $130.4 billion on the level recorded at the end of 2011.

The total value of imports and exports in 2012 reached $3.87 trillion, an increase of 6.2 percent on the previous year.

In 2012, total fiscal revenue reached 11.7 trillion yuan, an increase of 1.3 trillion yuan or 12.8 percent over 2011.
