As of today, Hong Kong customs have introduced new rules that restrict people leaving the Special Administraive Region from taking more than two tins of milk powder with them.

People who violate the restrictions face fines of up to 500,000 yuan or even a two-year prison term.

Ahead of the new restrictions coming into effect, local journalists reported a spike in the amount of milk powder being purchased in Hong Kong.

According to some reports, stocks of some well-known foreign milk powder brands were running low. In addition, stores like Mannings and Watson had put restrictions in place that limited the amount of milk powder that each customer could buy.

Reports also said that the price of milk powder in Guangzhou had already risen as much of it is sourced from Hong Kong.
