The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) will release a long-awaited urbanization plan next month, according to domestic media reports citing a report in the Hong Kong Economic Times (香港经济日报) that attributed the prediction to Yao Yang (姚洋), the recently-appointed dean of the National School of Development at Peking University.

The academic was also reported to have said that other policies will be announced later this year during the Third Plenary Session of the 18th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. These policy announcements will include details about changes to the country's household registration or Hukou system.

Reuters ran a report in May that claimed China's plan to spend $6.5 trillion on urbanization to bolster the economy was running into snags. The report was based on what unnamed sources close to the government had told the wire service. An official from the NDRC later dismissed the report, saying the plan was still under discussion.
