Thursday July 19, a man with a knife took a female security inspector hostage at a subway station in Beijing. The police shot the man dead after negotiations failed. The inspector is pictured here being accompanied out of the station by police officers.

The inspector was taken hostage at Hujialou Station on line 10. The police received the alarm call at 9:07 p.m., according to the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau. The special police officers are shown here leaving the scene.

After 70 minutes of persuasion failed, police shot the man dead. The female hostage was rescued safely. At 0:45, the police carried away the hostage taker's corpse.
