Wenchuan Town (汶川县), the center of the May 12, 2008 earthquake that killed roughly 70,000 people, is gaining nationwide attention once again.

The town has announced it will be selecting a new town head and will be accepting applicants from around the country. Anybody under 40-years-old with a college degree and two years’ experience as deputy-head-of-a-section (副科级) or a mid-level official may apply for the position.

Wenchuan isn’t alone. Shuimo Town (水磨镇) is also opening its town head selection process to the whole country. This is the first time for China’s towns to have such an open selection.

In the announcement, Wenchuan says it hopes to speed up construction of a beautiful and happy town.

The application deadline is Sept 28.
