Death Sentence for Former Deputy Mayor of Hangzhou Upheld on Appeal

On June 21, the Zhejiang Provincial High Court upheld the death sentence handed down to Xu Maiyong, the former deputy mayor of Hangzhou by Ningbo Intermediate People's Court on May 12 this year. Xu had been found guilty of taking advantage of the various official positions that he held from May 1995 to April 2009, of accepting around 145 million yuan in bribes and of misappropriating 53 million yuan in state assets in his position as chairman of a state-owned enterprise.
