Government Halts Operation of Otis Escalator Nationwide
China's State Quality Inspection Administration yesterday ordered a halt to the operation of all Otis escalators of the same model as the one which malfunctioned at a subway station in Beijing on Tuesday, resulting in the death of a 13-year-old boy. The same model of escalator, the Otis 513MPE, was also involved in an accident in Shenzhen last year. At a press conference last night, Beijing Municipal government officials said that relevant departments had confirmed that the model had design faults and also that it had not been properly maintained.
