Police Station in Xinjiang Attacked
At noon today a police station in the city of Hetian (also known as Khotan), located in the south of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region was attacked by a mob. The attackers forced their way into the police station, took hostages and set the station on fire. Xinhua reports that China's armed police rushed to the scene and shot dead several of the individuals involved in the attack and rescued 6 of the hostages. By 1.30pm, authorities said the situation was under control. One police officer and another officer with local security services were killed. The Anti-terrorism office is said to have already sent a work team to the area to take charge of investigating the incident.
