Safety Concerns Lead to Order Requiring No Overloading of Beijing Subway Carriages
In the wake of the fatal train crash in Wenzhou on Saturday evening, China's State Council held an emergency meeting and ordered all local governments to pay particular attention to safety issues. In keeping with the State Council's order, the Beijing Administration of Work Safety (北京市安监局) held an emergency meeting on Sunday to dicuss measures aimed at implementing heightened safety requirments. Vice-mayor Gou Zhongwen specifically raised the issue of over-crowding on Beijing's subway and emphasised the need to strictly enforce regulations that prohibit overloading of subway carriages. On Jul 22, the Beijing Subway Company announced that on Jul 15, a record 6.2 million passenger trips were made on all 12 lines of the city's subway system.
