Government Officials Sentenced in Shanghai Fire Disaster Case

Five officials involved in the fire disaster in Shanghai last year were handed long prison terms by the Shanghai No.2 Intermediate People’s Court earlier this afternoon.

Gao Weizhong, director of Construction and Communications Commission of Shanghai’s Jing’an District was sentenced to 16 years in prison.

Other officials in the commission, including Yao Yaming, the vice director, Zhou Jianmin, head of general management, Zhang Quan and Feng Wei received sentences of between 5 and 13 years and six months on charges of abuse of power and corruption.

The case is related to the fire that broke out in a residential building in Shanghai on Nov 15, 2010, that resulted in 58 deaths and 71 injured.
