After 7 Years 80% of New Breed of Government Spokespeople have Moved On

At the end of 2004, China's central government published the names and phone numbers of a new breed of specially-trained media spokespeople, 75 in all, that would help open up the inner workings of 62 of China's opaque central government ministries to the outside world. Among them was the recently dismissed spokesperson for the Ministry of Railways Wang Yongping, who is now reported to be heading to Poland to take up a new position. According to today's Beijing News, of the initial batch of 75 media spokespeople, only 12 still remain in their position. Of the remaining 80%, some have gone on to be promoted, some have moved into business and some have gone to work for local governments.
