More Than 200 Million Chinese Will Be Older than 60 By 2014

Within the next three years, the number of Chinese over the age of 60 will exceed 200 million, up from 178 million last Novermber, according to a government report released on Wednesday.

The Protection of the Rights and Interests of Elderly, a report overeseen by National People's Congress standing committee member Li Jianguo, says that people over 60 now account for around 13% of China's population. There were around 119 million people over 65 when China conducted its census last year.

The proportion of Chinese over the age of 60 first exceeded 10% - the threshold for United Nations classification as an ageing society - in 1999.
