China’s major power plants consumed 4 million tons of coal each day during July,  750,000 tons more than it was consuming twelve months earlier, as electricity consumption rose to new highs, the National Development and Reform Commission said Wednesday.

More of that coal was imported, with the country taking in 17.53 million tons of coal during the month, up 36% from July 2010.
