Suspect Who Accused Li Gang of Torture Sentenced to 13 Years After Re-trial

A District Court in Baoding, a city in Hebei Province, announced on its official Sina Weibo account just after midnight last night that a sentence had been passed down in the closely watched “Wang Chao Robbery Case” (王朝抢劫案”). The Beishi District Court once again sentenced Wang Chao to 13 years in prison on charges of breaking and entering with violent intent. According to the charges, Wang's crime took place on Aug 11, 2006 and Beishi District People’s Procuratorate first charged Wang with the offense in May 2007. Wang was found guilty and sentenced to 13 years prison in December 2007. Wang appealed the verdict, but the sentence was upheld. When the "My Dad is Li Gang" scandal erupted in China last year, Wang accused Li Gang (the deputy director of the public security bureau of Beishi district) of torturing him during questioning and prosecutors decided to re-open the case and a retrial was ordered.
