Han Jun, Director of Rural Economic Research Department, which is attached to the State Council, predicted yesterday that as urbanization continues to reshape China, the rural population will likely be reduced to 400 million people by 2040 from the current official figure of 900 million. Although, only 720 million people actually live in rural areas, one quarter of the 600 million people living in cities and towns are officially registered as rural residents.
