Corrupt Chinese Securities Trader Executed in Beijing

Yang Yanming, former general manager of the Beijing branch of China's Galaxy Securities, was executed yesterday after being sentenced to death for graft and embezzling public funds in 2007. Yang was first sentenced to death for the same crimes in 2005 before appealing the decision and the case was referred back to the lower court for retrial. The supreme court upheld the 2007 death sentence during a final appeal that concluded in March 2008. The execution is being reported as the first of its kind in China and many attribute the harsh sentence to Yang's refusal to reveal what happened to the 65 million yuan he pocketed from 1998 to 2003.
