With a gloomy property market and instability rocking the domestic stock market, private capital has turned to the market for agricultural products in search of returns, this has led to a rise in the price of rice, garlic, beans and some herbal medicines, according to Peng Sen, deputy director of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC). Peng also said that the severity of the drought in Southwest China and the cold weather in central and western areas of the country were responsible for the recent surge in the price of many agricultural products.
