Rate of GDP Growth Drops in 14 of 16 Provinces in First Quarter

Economic data from the first quarter of 2011 for China's 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions are gradually being released, so far, of the 16 provincial-level entities that have released their first quarter figures, 14 have registered a drop in the rate of growth compared to the same period last year. The two exceptions are Hunan province, which grew at 13.9% in the first quarter of 2011, up from a growth rate of 13.6 over the same peiod in 2010, and Xinjiang Autonomous Region. which grew at 11.5%, just a fraction faster than the 11.4% rate of growth registered at the start of last year. Despite the apparent slowdown, 15 of the 16 provinces are still growing at double-digit rates.
