To promote the development of electric cars, the Beijing government has allowed owners an exemption from the city's driving restrictions. According to an unnamed source, drivers of electric cars will not be subject to newly enacted registration restrictions in which new car owners take part in monthly auctions to register their vehicles nor will owners be required to observe driving restrictions that force most Beijing car owners off the road one day a week according to the last digit on their license plate. Electric car owners will also be exempt from paying consumption tax on the purchase of their vehicle.
