On October 27th, Beijing police arrested Lei Sen, a man suspected of setting off the explosion in Dongzhimen last week.

The explosion took place in front of the Sky Plaza building in Dongzhimen on Oct. 21. An American student was slightly injured and immediately taken to the hospital; he was released the same night. No additional injuries were reported.

The Beijing police have been investigating the blast since it took place. Officials are now confident that the perpetrator was Lei, a 27 year-old man from Peng’an County in Nanchong City, Sichuan Province.

Lei confessed he had committed the act “for personal reasons”. The case is still under investigation.

A Remote-control Toy Car

According to the stall holders at Huairou’s Xiayuan market, police escorted the blast suspect to the market yesterday in order to collect evidence and they said the police told them the man was suspected of being behind the Dongzhimen blast and of purchasing items used in the blast at the market.

The policemen first distributed photos of the suspect, asking if anyone had seen him before. In the afternoon, they returned accompanied by the man in the photos in order to make a list of the items he had bought from the market and for stall holders to identify him.

According to the sellers, the suspect separately bought a remote-controlled toy car, a soldering iron, light bulbs and a few other items.

As the case is still being investigated, the police requested that store owners retain any surveillance video they might have for later inspection if necessary
