Taiwan opens Universities to Mainland Students, but with Restrictions
The Taiwanese legislature approved a bill allowing 2,000 students from mainland China to attend University in Taiwan every year. The bill also requires that local Universities recognize diplomas from mainland schools. Despite these changes, Taiwanese law still prohibits mainland students from entering certain “confidential institutions” and obtaining full or part-time jobs in Taiwan.

Property Developers Carrying 600 Billion Yuan in Debts
Despite impressive profit earnings in the first half, 63 listed property companies have incurred a combined debt of over 600 billion yuan. Debts of the four largest Chinese property developers, Vanke, Poly, Merchant Property and Gemdale, together account for 277.9 billion yuan , 47.37% of the 600 billion yuan debt.

Refined Oil Pricing Mechanism May be Modified
The 21st Century Business Herald reports that the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) has finished their evaluation of China’s pricing mechanism for refined oil. Critics of the current mechanism believe that modifications can shorten the period of price adjustment from 22 days to 10.

Centrally-Owned Enterprises to Invest in Electric Cars
The State-owned Asset Supervision and Administration Commission is planning to invest 1.3 billion yuan in China’s electric car Industry. The heads of 16 Centrally-owned enterprises (COEs) will gather in Beijing to discuss the details of the plan. The meeting fuels speculation about the possible formation of a “national team” of electric car manufacturers.

State-owned enterprises have earned a total profit of 1.09 trillion yuan in the first seven months of this year, a 50.1% increase from last year. However, since profits in July are down 11.55% from June profits, monthly growth rates may be slowing.
